Artist Bio

Luis Garcia is an El Salvadoran/Pipil, polio survivor, Oakland-based artist.    Luis’s perspectives have been shaped by having been born in El Salvador, raised in U.S., and being disabled individual There are many layers, dualities that best reflect his worldview. In becoming a visual artist, Luis learned more about his ancestral roots. The visual journey has led him to focus his art making on reconnecting to his ancestry, to explore Indigenous cultures.  His artwork also reflects on a myriad of social political issues, such as homelessness, immigration, disability rights, gender equity, and environmental issues. Luis work typically carries echoes of surrealism, portraiture, abstracted qualities, all layered and mixed in with spirituality, cultural, and social imagery. His compositions are complex and multifaceted. The tapestry of artwork that Luis creates reflects his passion, and dedication to these concerns.  It allows him to have a visual voice that can carry important messages to the viewers. Art has helped him in broadening his sense of place. It has allowed him to visually state his perspectives, thoughts, and worldview via a painterly language.

Luis graduated from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 2002 with Honors, earning an individualized B.F.A. combining Painting and Sculpture. His work has been exhibited at various esteemed venues: Chico Museum of Northern California, Marin MOCA, Mission Cultural Center, Galleria de la Raza, SOMARTs, Berkeley Art Center, and he was the inaugural Artist in Residence at Marin Museum of Contemporary Art.  Luis is a current member, award winner, and exhibiting artist of Marin MOCA, and most recently Curated his first Museum Exhibition at Marin MOCA.
